The
Mitsubishi Mirage was likewise sold for a time asthe
Mitsubishi Colt, Dodge Colt, Plymouth Champ and the Lancer Fiore in most export markets. It was a subcompact car designed to meet energy-conservation needs and was sold from 1978 to 2002. In 1989 the Mirage was offered as a sport hatchback with a turbocharged 135-horsepower, 1.6-liter engine with a five-speed manual transmission, sports suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, in any case this rendition was not offered again when the 1989 model year. In 1995
Mitsubishi briefly stopped selling the
Mirage sedan to the public, only offering it through fleet sales.

In 1997 the
Mirage went through its final redesign and the four-door sedan made its return; though the Chrysler clone cars were no longer available. At this time, the lineup consisted of a notchback two-door coupe and a revised four-door sedan, both offered in the base DE (renamed to ES in 2001) trim or the more upscale LS trim.
The DE models had a 1.5-liter, 4 cylinder engine producing 92 horsepower, while the LS was powered by a 1.8-liter, 4 cylinder engine producing 113 horsepower. Standard on both was a five-speed manual transmission, with an optional four-speed automatic offered. LS models also offered optional power windows, power locks, cruise control, sunroof, and 14-inch wheels. In 2002, the last production year for the
Mirage, only the coupes were sold as the Mirage was replaced by the
Mitsubishi Lancer the following year.
